Bathroom Fire @ Crozer

4/15: At 11:32 hours, Station 57 was Alerted of A building Fire at Crozer Hospital. Reports came in as a Fire in the Bathroom, which was extinguished by the Nurses. Units Investigated under 57-9 (Smith) to find a light had overheated and started to burn the wall. Companies assisting were Chester Fire Co. 82, Brookhaven(52), Parkside(45) & Greenridge (63).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


New Tac Seats

Tac 57 was sent over to EPI in New Jersey To have new Ho Bostrom Pack Seats installed.
FireFighters can now don their Air Packs while Responding to a Call instead of waiting to arrive.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Members Attend Class At Training Center

2/10/07- 2/11/07: This Saturday and Sunday members (Asst. Chief Steve Johnson, Safety Officer Paul Michalkiewicz, Asst. Engineer Jim Cassidy, Fire Fighters Kevin Koslowski, Mandy DeRosa, and Cadet Stephanie Johnson) attended A Fire Fighter Survivor class at Delaware County Emergency Service Training Center.  We would like to thank the instructors who were Chief Billy Goldfeder (www.firefighterclosecalls.com) and Mike Wilbur from FDNY’s Ladder-27 (www.emergencyvehicleresponse.com). Both discussed several scenario’s where firefighters were either injured or killed and points of interest to possibly prevent these incidents from happening. This was a great experience and an eye-opener for all.

Air Pack Review

1/15/2007: Tonight members performed their yearly  S.C.B.A certification. Members reviewed proper inspection/cleaning procedures along with the proper way to don the air pack.

Drills will be held the First and Third Mondays, starting on January 15th, with SCBA review.
Cadet/Junior Drills will be held on the second Monday of the Month.

Special Drill: January 23rd at station 50 (Middletown), All Members attending should report to U.F.C by 1815 hours.

57 for the R.I.T

12/8/2006- Company 57 was dispatched at 11:50 hours to assist Company 63(Greenridge) and 72(Aston Beechwood) for R.I.T. 57-2 arrived on scene and set up and then was assisted by the crew of TAC 57. Crews operated under 63-9 (D. Evans) and stood by while the company's did an exterior attack. 57-2 responded with Fire Fighters W. Fraim, D. Nuscis, A. Turner, and Chief Engineer Doug Scott. TAC 57 followed with Hon. Chief Eng. S. Johnson, J. Cassidy III, S. Edwards, and Safety Officer P. Michalkiewicz. Upland Fire Co. would like to wish the injured Fire Fighters a quick recovery.

2006 Fire Prevention Winners from the Main Street School

        We would like to Congratulate Ethan Scalies from the Kindergarten Class, and, Jovani Perez and Alana Younger from the First Grade Class, for winning Upland Fire Companies annual Fire Prevention Contest. This year the students were asked to draw and color a picture of 57-1. The winners received their names on a plaque, and Upland Fire Company sweat shirts.

More Updates to the firehouse

Members spent time around the firehouse installing the new ready racks gear system that was ordered and bought through the State fire grant program. 

 


 

Glasstown Antique Fire Brigade

Several members of Upland Fire Company attended the muster held at the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center in Millville, NJ.  Three teams represented Upland Team A which consisted of Steve Johnson, Woody Kibler, Dan Smith, and Kevin Kozlowski.  Team B consisted of Jim "The Fired Up" Cassidy, Doug "Mohawk" Scott, Will Fraim, and Dan Nuscis.  The girls team this year was made up of Stephaine Johnson, Sandy Johnson, Marsha Scott, Sharon Pyle, and Monica Manercia.  Competitions started off with the girls team getting a bye in the barrel fight.  The teams fought other teams from around the New Jersey area.  Team A finished up with first place.  Team C finished in second, and Team B took third.  Upland Fire Company also received a special judges award for there continued support in the muster.  Crews enjoyed a BBQ back at the hotel with the traditional balloon slingshot finishing off the night.  Upland also was spot lighted in the front page of The Daily Journal newspaper in New Jersey.  Special thanks goes out to this years business sponsors for their continued support.  T-mugs, F.O.E. 74 and Crozer Mills Enterprises.

ANNUAL FUND DRIVE

This years annual fund drive has been mailed out to all businesses and residents in the borough of Upland.  Upland Fire Company relies on the support received through this fund drive.  Please take a min to help out the firehouse. 

           


Upland Fire Co. hosted a pump school at the station on June 10th & 11th and 24th &25th. Three of our members, W. Fraim, J. Cassidy, and S. Edwards as well as members from Stations 47, 49, 61 all completed a 32 hour pump class.
Special thanks to Frank Moyse and Tim Mason for teaching the class and to A.F. Damon for clearing the Chester creek so we could draft.
 

 

 

 

 


Cadet/ Junior Car Wash

                    The Cadet and Juniors of Upland Fire Company held there annual car wash and cake back sale.  The weather was perfect with 42 cars being washed through out the day.  Congrats to the group for hosting such a great event.

       

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

The officers and members of Upland Fire Company would like to congratulate member Heather Meekins on the birth of her baby girl Kylee Lynn.  The baby weighed in at 7 lbs. 9 oz. and was 21.5 inches long.  Check back soon for pictures of the newest member of the Upland Fire Company family.

 


6/25:
            Company 57 was dispatched at 02:23 hours to assist company 47 (Chester Township) at the intersection of Elson Road and Woodworth Street for a vehicle fire.  Chief 47-9 arrived on location and found a vehicle fully involved.  Engine 57-2 arrived on location first and went into service with the forestry line off the front bumper.  The crew from Upland was quickly backed up from the crew of Rescue 47.  Units remained on location until 03:09

                     

 


            Upland fire company recently put into service various Water rescue Safety equipment.  Chief John Zachar from Lenni Heights Fire Company spent a drill night going over the proper way to Wear and use the equipment.  Life vests, Water rescue helmets, and throw ropes were purchased to protect the borough of Upland in the case of flooding.  Each member took turns throwing the ropes to see how they are deployed and how to repack them properly.  Thank you to John, and his men from Lenni Heights for teaching us.

                                                       

 


New look for the station

The firehouse recently had new windows installed in the bay doors of the station.  The original panels had small oval windows installed in them made of Plexiglas which over time faded and made it hard to view out of, or allow light to enter into the apparatus room.   With the newly installed full glass panels the firehouse now has light shining back in which will allow the sun to heat up the apparatus room along with letting members see out easier.

 

 

 

 

 


5/1:
                Upland Fire Company members spent the night drilling on some donated cars in front of the station.   Tonight's drill was on vehicle fires.  Members used the forestry line along with the piercing nozzle to extinguish different scenarios. 

   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


4/15:
                The annual Easter Egg hunt and breakfast was held today at the ball field.  The Easter egg hunt started off at 9:30 with a very large crowd gathered.   Immediately following the hunt guests were invited back to the fire house for breakfast with the man himself.   The event was made possible with help from the Upland AC, Upland Borough Council, Upland Marine League, and the Main Street School PTO.  Thanks to everyone who came out and made this day a great event.

Upland Fire Company held a Fire Prevention coloring contest with the kindergarten and first grade classes of Edison Main street Academy in the borough of Upland.     The children were given a picture of the station with the various pieces of fire apparatus.  After the November meeting members choose the two winning entries with the winners being Quadir Albright from the kindergarten class and Timothy Johnston from the first grade class.  Asst chief Steve Johnson presented the students with shirts and  had there named engraved in the fire prevention plague that hangs in the Museum.  Congrats to all the students for there effort. 

    


              The annual Junior/Cadet fire drill tonight when over extinguisher training.  The Jrs. and cadets got to use the dry chemical and Pressurized water extinguishers to extinguish a live fire in a pan. 

        


Special Award Issued

At the regular monthly meeting of the firehouse State Representative Thaddeus Kirkland visited the firehouse.  We have been blessed twice by the state representative with two grants.  Both grants were used to purchase equipment and tools that were needed when the new engine was purchased.  Thank you Thaddeus for all your help you have given the Upland Fire Company.


 

10/13:
                The officers and members of Upland fire company wish to welcome two new members to the crew.  Will Fraim and Todd Chalfont became active senior members of the company.  Both are enrolled in the Delaware State Fire School at this present time.  Good Luck guys.

10/10:
                As the Open House was coming to an end Companies were dispatched to Washington Street in the borough of Brookhaven for a report of a building fire.  An officer from Parkside was on location with a detached garage full involved with explosions.  52-9 (Montella) arrived to confirm a one and a half story garage well off.  The crew from Upland assisted with fire suppression and overhaul.  Companies on Location were Brookhaven, Upland, Chester Township, and Aston Beechwood for the RIT team.


10/10:
                The annual open house and fire prevention show was held tonight at the station.  Neighbors and friends got an up close look at the Equipment that is available to the residents of Upland in the time of an emergency.  Special thanks goes out to Upland Borough Council, The Upland PD.  Fire companies that were in attendance were Brookhaven, Parkside, Chester Township, Marcus Hook, and Lenni Heights.  Thanks to all who attended.

COUNTY CONVENTION PARADE

10/8:
                Upland Fire Company attended the Delaware County Fireman's Association parade hosted by Glenolden Fire Company today despite the rain coming down steady.  All three pieces of apparatus attended the parade.  Station 57 brought home four trophies.  The awards were as followed:

57-1:    Took 2nd place for Best appearing and most functional engine year 2000 and newer

57-2:    Took 1st place for Best appearing and most functional engine year 1990 - 1994

TAC57:    Took 1st place for Best appearing and most functional Mini Pump/Brush Truck

Station 57:    Took 1st place for Best appearing Delaware County Fireman's Association Organizational member with 3 or more pieces of Apparatus which had a cash prize of $250.

9/25:
                Before the Eagles were to take on The Oakland Raiders Several members of Upland Fire Company took the time to help out our friends at the Caleb Pusey Plantation with moving some old cabinets from the old main gym on Main Street back to the old school house on Race Street.  The cabinets were relocated for a short period while the construction was going on at the new county housing site.  After the cabinets were placed back in there rightful locations the members were treated to a personal tour of the Caleb Pusey House which was built in 1683 and is well known for the housing of William Penn.  Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Peden for allowing us to partake in such an important event.

9/17:
                Upland Fire Company along with the boys from Green ridge made the long trip down to Dover Delaware for the 85th Annual Delaware State Fireman's Association Convention Parade.  57-2, TAC 57, and Truck 63 represented Delaware County.  After Having some Food and Drinks the crews were rewarded for all there hard work.  57-2 Took 1st place for Best Appearing Non-Member Pumper.  TAC 57 took 1st place for Best Appearing Non-Member Specialized Unit.  Truck 63 took 1st place for Best Appearing Non-Member Ladder.  Next stop for Both Companies is the Delaware County Convention Parade in October.


DCFA Project Completed

The members recently completed the Delaware County Fireman's Association Poster contest.  The entry was installed on the outside of the firehouse for judging.  All residents and friends are welcome to take a look at our entry.

       


9/12:
            The officers and members of Upland Fire Company wish to congratulate member Adam Hart on the completion of Officer one, and Inspector one courses for the United States Air Force.  Adam Is stationed at the Ellsworth Air force Base in South Dakota as a Firefighter.  With the completed courses Adam goes from Airman 1st Class to Senior Airman.  Adam Good Luck, Be Careful, and Hope to see you home soon from your friends at Station 57.

 


The new A/C / Heater combo was installed recently in the office.  The unit was donated to the Upland Fire Company from the Crozer Mills Associates from Upland Avenue.  The Officers and Members wish to thank them for the Generous Donation.
             


                    The 25th annual Glasstown Antique Muster was held at Wheaton Village in Millville New Jersey.   The Dilly and Hose Cart were on display.  Several members also participated in the competitions.  Upland Guys team A Walked away with first place in the Barrel Fight.  With strong showings from Upland Guys Team B and the Upland Girls.  Upland is the only station that has a full female team competing every year.  Steve Johnson, Woody Kibler,  Sonny Johnson, and Kevin Koslowski made up team A.  Doug Scott, Ricky Bailey, Mike Bailey Sr., and Dave Boyer made up Team B,  The girls team consisted of Marsha Scott, Monica Manerchia, Regina Smith, Stephanie Johnson, and Sandy Johnson.

57-9A Dan Smith underwent surgery on August 3rd all went well.  The officers and members wish him a speedy recovery.  While in recovery Dan can still enjoy firefighting with his new emergency vehicle.  See you on the fire grounds in 8 weeks!

       


7/29:

At 23:33 Hrs. Upland Fire Company was dispatched to 4927 Jackson Drive in the borough of Brookhaven for a Building fire.  52-9 (Montella) went on Location with medium smoke showing with a possible Bathroom fire.   57-1's crew was told to proceed to the front of the building then told there orders were to perform Ventilation of the second floor.  Crews made a quick knock of the fire with Company 57 returning into service at 00:09 hrs.


7/26:

Assist to Chester Township

Company 57 was dispatched for the Rapid Intervention Team at 14:30 Hrs to 2500 Concord Road The Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.  47-9B was on location with heavy smoke showing from the rear of there Crematorium.  Upon going responding 57-2 was notified to change there assignment to fire suppression and were relieved of there R.I.T. duties.  57-2 Reversed laid 900 Feet of 5" hose to the hydrant on Incinerator Road.  The went to four alarms before it was brought under control.  Company 57 was on location for 5 hours and 5 minutes.  Special thanks to company 49 (Milmont Park) and Company 40 (Boothwyn) for covering our local.

7/18:

Blown Transformer

At 14:30 hrs. Fireboard notified the officers of Upland Fire Company that PECO was on location at the firehouse and would be shutting the firehouse power down due to the transformer supplying the firehouse leaking oil.  Peco's environmentalist made the decision to have the transformer removed and a new one installed.  With the transformer leaking oil the EPA was notified and a clean up crew was sent out to vacuum the oil out of the old transformer before it could be removed off site.  Power was restored to the station a little past 21:00 hrs. 

   
   


6/18:
            Station 57 Drove up the Blue Route today to the Montgomery County Training Academy to do live burn evolutions with Companies 49 (Milmont Park) and Company 11 (Morton).  The crews did evolutions on commercial and structural firefighting.  The officers and members of Upland Fire Company would like to thank the Milmont Fire Company for inviting us to join them.

VEHICLE INTO BUILDING

6/12:
            At approx 13:30 Hrs the rescue assignment was dispatched to the 200 block of 6th street for an accident with entrapment and vehicle into the building.  Chief 57-9 went on location with a three vehicle accident, one vehicle into the building with negative entrapment, and four injuries.  Chief 57-9 requested a second BLS and later a second ALS due to the amount of injuries.  57-2's crew secured the vehicles while rescue Co 52. checked for structural damage to the building and assisted with patient care.  After vehicles were removed oil dry was applied and units returned.  Units on location were 57-2, TAC57, 52-6, 52-6A, medic 45, 45-7A, medic 83-7, and sixth district fire police.

6/05:
           Units were dispatched at 14:49 to 6717 Hilltop Drive in the borough of Brookhaven for a building fire.  52-9 Chief Montella arrived on location and had medium smoke showing from a two story middle of row.  Crews from Brookhaven went into service with a 1 3/4" attack line.  Uplands crew checked the exposure for extension then did a sweep of the fire building for any hot spots.  Companies on scene were Upland, Brookhaven, Chester Township, Garden City, and Aston Beechwood for the Rapid Intervention Team.


RIT assist to Aston Township

6/05:
            At 4:29 Company 57 was dispatched to 250 Bodley Road to Assist Aston Township on a working Building fire.  57-2 responded and performed Rapid Intervention.  The crews had a large Landscaping truck on fire inside the building.  Crews performed a quick knock and the company returned by 5:45


BRING 2 TAKE 4

That was the goal of Upland Fire Company as it attended Prospect Parks Parade and Housing of there new Seagrave Pumper.  Station 57 brought 57-1 and the TAC on a day that started out rainy and turned out perfect.   Upland Fire Company brought home four trophies on the day including Best appearing pumper 2000 to present, Best appearing Specialty Unit, Best appearing Seagrave, and Best appearing Company with 3 or less pieces.  Hence the "Bring 2 and take 4" motto.  Good luck to the officers and members of Prospect Park fire company on your new piece of apparatus.


Upland Fire Company again opened there doors to McDonalds and the LPGA.  Each year McDonalds hosts the LPGA tournament in the area and Upland Fire Company assists M&M Restaurant Supply along with the area owner/operators of the local McDonalds with making the Goody and Gift bags needed for the events.  Good luck to all contestants.

                


PECO Problems

After a brief but strong Thunderstorm Company 57 was dispatched to the 1100 block of Mulberry for a tree branch down on some wires.  57-2 Responded and found a large branch had snapped off and was hanging on the high tension wire from the top of a Peco pole in front of 1022 Mulberry.  Peco was notified and the company cleared.  This was the first of many calls to this location for the repeated problem of wires arcing throughout the next three days with no response from Peco.  After the fourth visit to the pole for this location corporal Dave Edwards from the Upland Police Department Notified Delcom that the borough requested for a supervisor from Peco to immediately responded to the location.  After the supervisor went on location a call was put in for a repair crew to respond and complete the repairs.  No calls have been reported since.

79th Anniversary and Housing of 57-1

It was a beautiful day for a parade.  Upland Fire Companies 79th anniversary and Housing Parade was held May 7th.  Companies Registered and Lined up at the Upland Shopping center with the parade starting off at 12:00 Noon.  Afterwards there was refreshments and food back at the firehouse for the ceremonies.  Honored Guests included Curt Weldon, Thaddeus Kirkland,  and Kenneth Miller.  Thank you to all companies that made our day a success.

Later That Evening Upland Celebrated its 79th anniversary with a party in Baxter Hall.  This years award winners were Dan Smith for Fireman of the year,  Gwynn Adcock won the Chiefs Award,  And Marsha Scott was Presented with her Honorary Status.  Air Pack Challenge winners were  2nd Place Rick Bailey, 1st Place Mike Bailey Jr., and Judges award Joey Taylor IV.

4/29:
                   Engine 57-2 with 6 personnel covered Station 40 tonight while there members had time to reflect on the memories of Steven "Tater" Powers


Funeral for Steven "Tater" Powers

4/29:
                Today 57-2 and Tac 57 attended the funeral for Steven "Tater" Powers a well known member of Station 40 (Boothwyn Fire Company) words can not explain how many lives "Tater" touched.  Steve will be greatly Missed.


4/29:
                At 4:55 Pagers sounded for the cover assignment for Station 40.  57-2 with 6 personnel made the response.  Upper Chi units were operating at a house fire on Cherry Street.  57-2 Returned at 06:31 Hrs.


MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF:

Its been a long hard year and the Engine (57-1) is finally done and in service, Thanks to all the dedicated members who made this possible.  The borough residents should be proud to have a quality front line engine (Seagrave) and dedicated members to protect them and their properties.  Thank you and stand proud for what we have accomplished.

Housing Preparations

4/25:
            Members have been busy getting ready for the housing of Engine 57-1 on May 7th.  A Parade and housing ceremony will start at 12 noon. and is open to the public.


3rd Alarm Fatal Assist to Chester Fire Dept.

4/23:
            While City crew were tied up at a job on 10th Street, Chester 11 was alerted of another fire at 3rd and Lamokin Streets.  83-1 made the response and went on location with a 2 story middle of the row with heavy fire on the 1st and 2nd floor.  83-1 dropped the 5" and 57-2 picked up the hydrant right behind them.  The crew from 57-2 were ordered by 83 command to take a line to the rear, they started venting and encountered heavy fire conditions and proceeded an attack on the fire.  After all visible fire was knocked Chief 57-9 and a Firefighter from Company 83 did a secondary search of the building.  They located a victim on the 1st floor in the rear of the building, but it was too late.  The victim had been overcome by the smoke.  Good job by all companies on scene.  Total manpower for 57 was 15.  Company 57 went available at 19:39 Hrs other units on scene Chester 9, Tac 57, Eng. 45, 52-6, Eng 39, Company 61, 81-8, and 82-8.

Two days Two brush fires

4/19/05--4/20/05
            At 18:19 on 4/19 Station 57 was alerted to a brush fire in the front of 801 Upland Ave.  57-2 arrived to find a small brush fire to the rear of Concord Plywood.  Crews extinguished it with a P.W. and returned at 18:33 Hrs.
            At 16:45 Hrs on 4/20 The Station was alerted of a brush fire to the Rear of 873 Upland Ave. Chief 57-9 arrived to find a large brush fire and had TAC 57 go to the rear of the Armory Grounds and 57-2 and 57-1 to the rear of the shopping center.  Crews were able to contain the fire from further spread and returned to service at 17:25.  Total Manpower was 17

City cover and third alarm response

4/19:
            At 10:23 Hrs. Chester 11 hit out the second alarm moving 57-2 to cover the city wide assignment.  At 10:28 Hrs Chester 11 hit the third alarm moving up 57-2 to the scene at 2701 Madison St.  Command had the crew from 57-2 do a secondary search of the Building with other units on scene.  Search turned up with Negative findings.  Chester Fire Dept. made an aggressive stop of the fire as well as performing numerous rescues.


Oven Fire

4/15:
            Units were dispatched at 16:03 to 1009 Woodside Ave for the building fire reported to be in the kitchen.  Chief Mike Madigan went on Location with an active gas fed fire in the stove.  45-1 and 57-1 arrived on location at the same time with 45 securing the gas then entering the structure with the crew from 57.  A dry Chem. extinguisher was used to knock the outside fire down from the stove with the front glass needing to be removed to get to the inside. Oven was set on Self Cleaning which locked the front door on the oven and would not release.  Oven was removed from house and fan placed in service. Units on scene were from 57,52,45, Parkside Car 1A, and Medic 45.  Units cleared in 20 Mins. 

                            
           


Building Fire In Upland's Local

4/14:
            Company 57 was dispatched at 16:54 to 405 West 9th street for the dwelling fire.  57-9 (Mike Madigan) went on location with medium smoke showing and had the assignment re-dispatched for the working building fire in the kitchen.   57-2 went on location and went into service with the 200' 1 3/4 attack line threw  the front door.   A quick knock down was done with crews doing extensive overhaul and salvage.  Interior was handled by 57-9A (Smith).  57-9B (Johnson) had Manpower with 57-9 having 9th Street Command. Units Operating on Scene were 57,52,45,47, 72(RIT), Upland Car 1, and Medic and BLS 45.  Crews were on scene for 2 hours.  Thanks to Station 40 (Boothwyn) and 49 (Milmont) for covering our local.

57-1 PLACED IN SERVICE

4/2:
            Chief Mike Madigan Placed 57-1 is service today.  The engine is a 2004 Seagrave Attacker with a 6 man cab, 750 Gallon Tank, 1250 GPM pump, and Cat 9 Engine.  Hose amounts are 1100' of 5", 600 feet of 3",  (3) 1 3/4" Attack Lines, and (1) 2 1/2" Blitz Line.  Other special equipment include a Bullard T3 Max Thermal Imager and a LDH Portable Hydrant Valve.  Housing Will be May 7th.  See You there!!

3/26:
                The annual Easter egg hunt and breakfast was today with great success.  The Easter bunny and his crew hid eggs in Bristol load field for the borough Children to find.  After that people made there way across the street to the firehouse for breakfast with the Easter bunny.  Special thanks to the crew from Aston Beechwood for having breakfast with us.  This years event was sponsored by: The Upland Fire Company, Upland AC, Upland Borough, Marine Corps League, and The Thomas Edison PTO.  We hope to see everyone again next year.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Progress of 57-1

57-1 Was recently Striped and Gold Leafed by Danz Lettering.  The Oak Command Cabinet was also installed.  All the wood is now being mounted in the compartments to hold the tools and equipment.  Housing date is set for May 7th, 2005.  Check back for further progress

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


                   

January 16th:
                    The three Chiefs Traveled to Clintonville Wisconsin to do the final inspection on the new 57-1.  The weather was fringed with it being -7 degrees when we landed and -21 when we left to come back home.  After teaching Jim Shuster our sales Guy how to work the heat in the rental Car we headed over to see the engine. The engine looked great with there being minor changes that needed to be done.  Seagrave hopes to have it on the road Wednesday headed to the sales office for clean up and delivery.  Stay tuned for future dates.

January 13th:
                    Tonight was Installation of New Officers.  Upland Fire Company along with Borough Council were treated to a nice ceremony followed by a catered dinner.  Good Luck to all elected Officers.

 


 

Dec 22nd:
                    At 19:38 Company 57 was dispatched along with Companies 47 and 52 to 1129 Powell Road on the Toby Farms section of Chester Township for a Fire Alarm.  The call was at Sam And Sam Meat Market.  57-2 Arrived on location to find a heavy Haze in the building.  Crews were advised A Freon unit in the storage room was leaking freon.  A crew from 57 was sent in under the command of Asst chief Baron Belgrade from 47 and  found the main refrigeration unit for the building leaking.  The building was secured until all freon had been released from the unit and PPV fans were used to ventilate the building.  The store was closed for the night pending an investigation from the Heath Inspector.  Crews returned in a little over an Hour.

                                 

 


Dec 18th:
                    Upland Fire Company Was dispatched to 27 Church Street for the Dwelling fire.  Units responding were from Upland, Brookhaven, Chester Township, And Both Fire And Medics from Parkside.  57-9 (Mike Madigan) went on location with a Medium smoke condition in the dwelling.  45-1 arrived on location first and were given the orders by 57-9 to use the thermal Imager on the second floor.   45 Command found a small fire in the upstairs bathroom and Handles it with a PW extinguisher.  57-2 Arrived on location and checked the Third floor for any extension.  Remaining units staged with manpower.  After a small amount of overhaul units made themselves available.

Nov 26th:
                We recently Received Pictures of the progress of our new engine.  Jim Shuster Was out doing final inspections on Lansdowne and Drexel Hill's New Apparatus and snapped some shots for us.  Delivery should be in the early part of January.  Check back for more info and pictures later.

          


                                                          

 


 

Nov 22nd:
                Lenni Heights Fire Company visited Upland Fire House to hold a Water Rescue Drill.  The purpose of the drill was to review with the members of Station 57 what to expect and what will need to be done if there is a need for a rescue in the borough.  Chief John Zachar  and Asst Chief Jerry Rohme Brought the Command Vehicle along with the 14 Foot Inflatable over for the demonstration.   Thanks again to Lenni for the drill.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Nov 20th:
                Upland Fire Company Attended Brookhaven Boroughs annual Holiday Parade.  This years Parade had a theme of Supporting our troops during the holidays.  Adam Hart is an Active member of Upland Fire Company so the Station decided to make a float not only supporting the troops but supporting "One of our own".  Happy Holidays to all troops and there Families from The Upland Fire Company.    

 

         

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Rescue Tool Now in Service

                Esi Has Delivered and installed the new Holmatro Combi tool.  The company purchased the equipment with grant money from the state.  Several members of Upland Fire Company recently took the VRT class held at Brookhaven and Chester Townships Fire Houses with 5 going for there Department of Heath Certification Number.  All members are encouraged to Review the Apparatus for changes that were made with the unit being installed in the rear of 57-2.  Congrats to all who completed the courses.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Oct 16th:
                  The doors were open to the public as Upland Hosted their annual open house.  Mutual Aid Companies that run along side Station 57 were on hand to help out with the day.  Thanks to all who attended.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

Oct 9th:
                Upland Fire Company attended the Annual Delaware County Firemans Association Parade Hosted by Yeadon Fire Company.  Yeadon was housing A new Ambulance along with celebrating their 100 years in service.  Full company went and Displayed all pieces of Apparatus and Marched pulling the "Dilly" below is a list of Awards won.

Best Appearing Hand Drawn:              1st for The 1790 Mason know as the "Dilly"
Best Appearing Antique in Service:    1st for the 1960 Antique
Best Appearing and most Functional Mini Pumper:    1st for Tac 57
Best Appearing and Most Functional Pumper 1988-1996:    1st for 57-2

The Company also took 2nd place for Best Appearing Company Overall!!

"THE MACK'S IN THE NEWS ALREADY"

After its long trip down to Greenville County, Tennessee the old 57-3 was renumbered to fit into Debusk Fire companies Apparatus Fleet.  Shortly after the engine was placed in service it ran its first call.  A working building fire in a Church.   A quick knock down was performed by the manpower under the direction of Chief Rob Brown.  The Mack performed Flawlessly.  The fire is under investigation by the County fire marshal and the ATF due to it being in a church.   We again Congratulate Debusk on the acquisition of the engine.


8/25:
            The officers and members of Upland Fire Company want to wish Sonny and Faye Johnson a Happy 50th Anniversary.  A grand celebration was held at Upland Fire Companies Baxter Hall.  Family and Friends came out to wish the two many more years of happiness.  The party lasted long into the night. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


8/18:
            Congratulations to Engineer Mike Sokolovich and his wife Firefighter Jenn Sokolovich on the birth of there baby Daughter.  Baby Leann was born on September 18th at 7:14am.  She weighed in at 7lbs 14oz and was 19 1/2" in length.  Both mother and baby are doing great.


57-3 HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!!!

8/17:
            After several failed attempts by Debusk Fire Company to have the Mack transported down to Tennessee they finally had a company that was willing to assist them.  System Transport out of Spokane Washington was dropping a piece of equipment off in Chicago and agreed to stop by and pick up the truck.  The Mack was driven over to New Way Machine Components in Chester Township where there Docking Pit was used to load the truck on the trailer.  After securing the engine down it headed for its long trip down to Greenville County, Tennessee. 
            To Chief Rob Brown, The officers, and Members of Debusk Volunteer Fire Company the engine has served the borough of Upland for many years we wish you many great years of service with "The Mack"

    

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


8/30:
            Members from Company 57 inspected the new parking garage on the CCMC hospital grounds. The inspection was to make sure TAC 57 could drive in the garage incase of any emergencies.  The stand pipe system was also checked.

    


8/30:
            ESI Corporation was at the firehouse tonight Measuring 57-2 for the holmatro Combi-Rescue tools that were purchased with a grant received from the state.  All equipment should be in and installed within three to four weeks. 

        


8/29:
            Company 57 was asked by Carters Daycare of 601 Upland Ave. to attend there 1 year anniversary and Open House.  57-2 and Tac 57 attended the event and allowed the Children to put out flames of our Flame House.  Fire Prevention Material was also handed out.  Upland Fire Company thanks Carters Daycare for there hospitality. 

    

 


 

 

8/15:
            Upland Fire Company attended the annual Wheaton Village Antique Muster in Millville NJ this weekend.  The Dilly was on Show for all to see.  In the competition part of the muster Upland Represented with three teams, Upland Team A consisted off Steve Johnson, Woody Kibler, Rick Bailey, Dan Smith, and Kevin Koslowski.  Upland Team B Consisted of Gary Meekins, Doug Scott, Paul Michalkiewicz, Mike Bailey Sr..  Upland Team C was our ladies team that consisted of Jackie Meekins, Sandy Johnson, Marsha Scott, Regina Smith, and Stephanie Johnson.  After bracket play in the barrel Fight Upland team A faced off against Upland team B for first Place.  First place went to Upland team A second to Upland team B and special Judges award went to Upland team C.  A great Time was had by all.  Thanks to 40-9A (Rocky) for the Pics.

ENGINE 57-3 SOLD !!!!

The officers and members of Upland Fire Company would like to congratulate Debusk Volunteer Fire Company from Greenville, Tenn. on the purchase of 57-3 "The Mack",  Chief Rob Brown and Asst. Chief Travis Saulsbury made the trip on Thursday to review the engine then spent all day Friday going over the pump.  57-3 will have its call numbers changed to engine 22-02 and will be Debusk's first out engine on all calls.  We wish you good luck and many years of service with your new "Mack".

July 4th:
                Upland Fire Company participated in the annual fourth of July Competition help between Brookhaven, Garden City, Parkside, And Upland.  This years event was sponsored by Garden City.  The Competition was a bucket brigade.  For the Third year in a row the Team from Upland Fire Company has taken First place.  We would like to thank all the other teams who participated this year for a great time.

       


June 19th:
                The morning started off with the annual Cadet / Jr. Car wash at Upland Fire House.  Cars started to get cleaned at 10:00 am.  At 10:52 the company was dispatched to asst Company 52 (Brookhaven) with a building fire at 280 Bridgewater Road. The Trimble Run Apartments, Building F for a building fire.  52-9 ( R. Montella Jr.) Went on location with smoke showing from the second floor.  Units from 57 assisted Brookhavens manpower with opening up walls and ceilings and checking for extention with the thermal image camera.  Units cleared at 12:09 and went back to washing cars.


June 9th:
                Units were dispatched at 18:20 for a building fire at 1435 Rainer Road in the Toby Farms section of Chester Township.  Police went on location with a working building fire.  Crews from Upland entered the structure with the Thermal Image Camera to look for the base of the fire.  Units from 47, 52 (Brookhaven), and 45 (Parkside) were sent in for Fire Suppression.  Units were under the command of 47-9A Sally Comiseck.  Companies 40 (Boothwyn) and 49 ( Milmont Park) Covered 57's Local.  Upland Cleared the scene at 20:23

 


April 26th:
                At 3:08 in the morning Station 57 was dispatched to Assist Company 63 (Greenridge) on a second alarm building response at 4948 Pennel Road.  Greenridge Fire Company were out on a strip mall fire that was in the Army Navy store along with a Dry Cleaners.  Company 57 responded and reported to Man power.  The crew from Upland Fire Company was put into service with members from Company 50 (Middletown) to ventilate the Acme store and check for any extension.  The company went available at 5:20.  Check out Greenridge web site for more on this Incident.

 

 

 

 


April 3rd:
                    The 78th annual awards banquet was held in Upland Fire Companies Baxter Hall.  There were plenty of awards to be given out starting with the highest honor in the firehouse given to 2003 Honorary member  Ed Rostron.  Firefighter of the year for 2003 went to Chief Mike Madigan and the Chiefs Award was awarded to Paul Michalkiewicz.  A new award was started this year with Chrissy Scott Receiving the first ever Junior / Cadet Firefighter of the year.   Below is a Listing of this years top ten.  Total number of calls for 2003:  293

March 15th:
                    At 18:25 Companies 52, 57, 47, and 65 were dispatched to 532 West Brookhaven Road, Camelot Court Apartments, J- Building for a Building Fire.  52-9 (Rob Montella) went on location with smoke showing.  57-2 Arrived on location and was told to proceed past the building and go into service with an 1 3/4" hand line.  The first in crew lead by Chief Mike Madigan entered the basement of the structure to find a very heavy smoke condition.  52-1 arrived on location and supplied support to 57's crew.  Company 65 had Ventilation. The remainder of the balance went on location and started primary and secondary searches of all apartments.  Company 72 was dispatched  for Rapid Intervention.  The fire was contained to the basement storage and laundry area.  Incident is under investigation by Brookhaven Car 1 Jim Voss.  Special thanks to 68 and 62 for covering during the incident.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Feb 9th:
                Station 57 held its yearly Air Pack Recertification.  Members had to show that they knew how to don an air-pack and know each component.  Along with the Certification Compressed Air Systems was at the Station installing the companies new Bauer P2 / w Securus air compressor system.  Used for refilling air Bottles.  The unit along with all new Janesville Turn out gear for the members were purchased with monies received from the Government Fire Act Grant program.

                Installation of this years 2004 officers was performed at the monthly meeting with District Justice Kenneth Miller presiding.  Public Safety Director for the boro. of Upland Mike Ciach was also on hand.

SANTA VISITS UPLAND!!

12/20:
            Santa visited the boro of Upland to see all the good boys and girls.  He went around on the back of the Tac in the afternoon with his elves helping him hand out candy canes.  After heading over to Crozer Hospital to see the children that would not be home for Christmas, Santa relaxed before heading out once again this time at night with all the apparatus decorated for the occasion.

12/12:
            Company 57 was dispatched to Asst Aston Township with the Rapid Intervention Team.  The company responded to Rt. 452  and Mount Road where company 72 had a Propane tanker that had rolled over on its side with four other vehicles involved.  R.I.T. 57 was stationed in the veterinarian parking lot while crews awaited for the off loading of propane into a secondary tanker.  Crews from Upland also assisted with placing the portable hydrant and Deck gun in service.  Crews cleared the scene at 1:15.

            Company 57 was dispatched at 21:13 to cover Station 68 (Lennox Park) while they were on a two alarm building response in Marcus Hook.  57-3 and Tac 57 responded with a total of 12 members.  Units went available at 23:41

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


11/29:
        Station 57 attended Marcus Hooks annual Holiday and festival of lights parade through the streets of Marcus Hook.  The parade stepped off in the lower parking lot of ConocoPhillips  in Trainer and went up Market Street.  57-2, Tac 57, And holiday float 57 all attended the parade.

11/22:
            At 16:23 Company 57 was dispatched for the Rapid Intervention Team  to Bethal and Highland Aves for a reported building fire in an abandoned school.  47-9 (Jeff Comisack) went on location with smoke showing.  57-2 was second engine on scene and was immediately released from R.i.t. duties and was told to drop a 5" line back to Rescue 47.   Crews from 57 went into service with a 1 3/4" hand line off rescue 47.  The Thermal Image Camera was used to find the seat of the fire.  After a lengthy interior attack it was found the bulk of the fire was located in the roof area in the insulation.  Trench cuts were performed to stop the fire spread.  Company 72 was brought in to replace 57 with R.I.T. Units were made available at 19:49

11/19:
            @ 16:12 Company 57 was Dispatched to CCMC for a reported building fire.  57-9 went on location to find a large Turbine Boiler Engine in the Co-Generation plant had internally Malfunctioned causing the manifold to blow apart.  60 Gallons of Synthetic oil mixed with antifreeze and diesel fuel had to be contained.  Company 50 (Middletown) was dispatched for the Spill Unit.  57-9 had Hot-Zone Command with 50-9 (Sonny Strohl) having Interior Haz-Mat Command.  Total loss to the unit according to CCMC officials was over $200,000.  Units made them selves available @ 18:15.   Companies on location were 57 (Upland), 52 (Brookhaven), 45 (Parkside), 65 (Garden City), Tower 14 (Swarthmore), 82 (Chester), Telesqurt and Spill Unit from 50 (Middletown), Upland Car 1, Medics 45-7 and 82

11/15:
            @  4:42 Company 57 was dispatched to cover sta. 40 ( Boothwyn) while they were out on a working building fire @ 2021 Broomall Street.  While making the response 57-2 was directed to report to the scene to asst with fire suppression.  57's Crews used the Thermal Image Camera to find hidden hot spots.  Crews also assisted with salvage and overhaul.  Company was available at 8:33

 

 

 


Oct 30th:
               R.I.T. Company 57 was dispatched to 2211 West 11st Street at 18:00 for a report of a building fire in Chester Township.  57-2 Arrived on location and was advised by PD that a grease fire in the kitchen was extinguished with a heavy smoke condition in the building.    Crews from Ladder 32 under the command of Asst Chief Jay Smith Ventilated the building.  Units were under the command of 47-9 Jeff Comisak.  Units were available in a little over a half hour.


BUSY DAY FOR STATION 57

Oct 27th:
                Units were dispatched at 19:47 to number 9 7th street for a report of a building fire.  57-9 went on location with a dryer fire with smoke conditions in the building.  Crews from 45-2 and 57-3 contained it to the dryer and units were available at 20:22.  Companies on location were Company 57, Company 52, Company 45, Ladder Company 65, and Medic 45-7

                 Shortly after returning from the dryer fire the box was re-dispatched to 411 West 24th Street for a building fire.  57-9 went on location with Brownies on fire in the Oven.  Crews from 45-2 and 57-3 secured the munchies with 52 providing the ventilation.  Companies on location were Company 57, Company 45, Company 52, Ladder Company 65, and Medic 45-7.  Units cleared at 21:21


Fatality on the Highway

Oct 26th:
                Station 57 was dispatched to I 95 South in the Rear of Crozer Hospital to Assist the State Police with Lighting.   Upon going on location 57-9 was notified that the highway need to be lit up so the state could do an investigation of a subject struck and killed. Units were on the highway for a little over 2 and a half hours.

 

 


Oct 13th:
                It was a busy day for the members of Upland Fire Company.  The day started off with Assisting Parkside fire company with a working building fire with possible entrapment.  45-9A went on location with heavy fire showing no entrapment.  Crews from 57 asst the crew from 45 with fire suppression on the third floor.  Upland Crews were made available in an hour and a half.
 

                Later that same day Upland Fire Company was dispatched to 601 Upland Ave for a vehicle fire.  57-9 went on location on the Kerlin street bridge with a vehicle fully involved.  Crews went into service with a 1" forestry line backed up with the piercing nozzle.  Assisting the members of Upland was 52-6A from Brookhaven.  Pics taken by 52 member Bob Stephano.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


CLEAN SWEEP!
 

This years Delaware County Convention Parade was held in Folcroft.  Folcroft was housing a 2004 Pierce Skyboom.  Even though some unwanted rain fell the parade started at noon.  Below is the list of awards received from Station 57 on the day:

UPLAND WINS BIG !!!!

Upland Fire Company recently attended the 124th annual Pa State Firemans Convention hosted by Marcus Hook (Station 32).  With Twenty -Two members marching and every piece of apparatus Upland had to offer the hope for a clean sweep was dashed one shy.  The officers and members would like to congratulate Marcus Hook on a great parade.
